Dr MacDessi is the Chairman of Orthopaedics at St George Private Hospital, Director of Research and Training at Sydney Knee Specialists, Associate Professor at Oceania University of Medicine, and Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of NSW.  Dr MacDessi has a special interest  in knee arthroplasty and knee sports medicine surgery. His research interest is in evolving techniques in knee arthroplasty surgery and has extensive experience in the field of knee arthroplasty, osteotomy and ligament reconstruction. His recent research has been on defining the relationship of alignment and soft tissue balance in total knee arthroplasty, with the aim to delivering more effective ways of restore each patient’s unique anatomy and improving outcomes.

Dr MacDessi was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2004 and was the Knee and Hip Reconstruction Fellow at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York in 2005-06. He completed his Doctorate of Philosophy in Knee Surgery from the University of NSW in 2020 and received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis. This important research culminated in development of a new surgically applicable classification for knee alignment: the “Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee” or CPAK classification. He has co-authored texts on minimally invasive knee surgery, has multiple publications in the field of knee surgery, and is a reviewer and editor for several international orthopaedic journals. He is a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, Australian Knee Society, Arthroplasty Society of Australia, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine and the Australian Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
